Fort Bend ISD (April 22, 2025)— Gertrude Simmons retired from Lantern Lane Elementary in 2020, but she still returns to campus once a week to volunteer.

While teaching at Lantern Lane, she enjoyed assisting Music Teacher Pamela Williams with the choir. So, when she decided to volunteer after retirement, she
knew exactly where she wanted to help.

Now, she does whatever is needed — takes attendance, hands out after-school snacks, plays music — anything to support the students and the program s
he loves.

She even accompanies them on field trips.

Simmons taught at Lantern Lane for 14 years. Before that, she worked at Quail Valley Elementary and Ridgegate Elementary.

This week is Public School Volunteer Week and FBISD is proud to celebrate the dedicated parents, guardians and community members who support our
students and staff.

There are many ways to get involved in FBISD. https://www.fortbendisd.com/Page/131678
