Severe Weather Delays & Cancellations

When severe weather or hazardous road conditions impact the area, Riverdale USD prioritizes student and staff safety above all else. District administration closely monitors local forecasts and road conditions alongside local emergency management to make timely decisions regarding closures and schedule adjustments.

There are three types of scenarios:

  1. Full cancellation – When conditions are expected to be bad most or all of the day, school and activities are canceled.
  2. Two-hour delay – When conditions are bad in the early morning but expected to improve, start times can be delayed 2 hours. Occasionally a delay can turn into a cancellation if sufficient improvement does not occur.
  3. Early dismissal – When conditions start ok but then deteriorate through the day, students will be dismissed early. Exactly when depends on the conditions.

 

 

Official weather announcements are posted by 5:45 AM (or the evening prior when possible) through the following official channels:

  • ParentSquare: Direct text messages, emails, and app push notifications to all registered parents and guardians.
  • This Website: Pop-up alerts posted on district and school websites.
  • Local News Outlets: Broadcast notifications on Raleigh-area television and radio stations.

Early dismissals are communicated through the same channels but can come at any time of day as conditions warrant.

We recognize that weather conditions can vary across the region. If schools remain open but you feel driving conditions in your specific neighborhood are unsafe, your decision to keep your child home will be honored as an excused absence. Please notify the attendance line at 919-555-1313.

2-Hour Delay Schedule

When a two-hour delay is announced to allow road conditions to improve, school start times shift as follows:

  • Riverdale High School (Grades 9–12): 8:45 AM – 3:45 PM
  • Riverdale Elementary School (Grades K–5): 9:45 AM – 3:45 PM
  • Riverdale Middle School (Grades 6–8): 10:15 AM – 4:15 PM

Bus Schedules during a delay: Morning bus pickup times will run exactly 2 hours later than the regularly scheduled time. Free breakfast will still be served at all campuses upon arrival.
